We have a number of smartphone devices within the company to enable us to test the iPhone, Android and Blackberry apps that we develop. With the release of the new iPhone 4S with its “All-new 8 MP camera” we thought it would be good to do a comparison with the different devices in different settings. As you can see some smartphones are better than others.
The contenders
Still life
Canon EOS 6OD The benchmark. Ok a little unfair as it’s an 18 megapixel SLR and the lens cost more than some of the phones.
iPhone 4S Great on detail/shadows but colour is a little too ‘warm’
Nexus S Colour good. Detail ok.
iPhone 4 Colour was blown out. Detail good.
BlackBerry 9800 Good colour and detail. Similar to nexus s.
Indoor shots
Canon EOS60D The reference.
iPhone 4S Again note the ‘warm’ (yellow) tint. Great detail and shadow. Note the lettering on the cabinet
iPhone 4 Similar to nexus S for colour but better detail.
Nexus S Nexus and iPhone 4 both show similar colours. The nexus being a tad over saturated.
Indoor detail
Canon EOS 60D Masses of detail here.
iPhone 4S Very impressive. Clearly much better than either the iPhone 4 or Nexus S.
iPhone 4 Not bad – some button detail.
Nexus S Not quite as good as iPhone 4 here
Outdoor
iPhone 4S Colours and details best in this scene.
Nexus S Sky a little dark. But otherwise not bad
BlackBerry 9800 Colours are terrible here. Detail ok.
HTC Desire Colour ok. But details absolutely awful. It’s difficult to describe just how bad the Desire’s supposed 4 meg camera is.
Outside detail
iPhone 4S Plenty of detail – low noise.
Nexus S Not bad detail sky colour a little ‘grey’
BlackBerry 9800 Detail ok but colour is off.
HTC Desire Oh dear – thankfully they don’t make this anymore.
Macro shots
iPhone 4S Pretty good macro capability.
